Designing Hotels for the Next Generation

Designing Hotels for the Next GenerationSummer has begun, and that means travel! Over half (54%) of all generations say they are planning on traveling more this year than in 2015, but for millennials, that number is 72%. By 2020, it’s projected that half of the money spent in the travel sector will come out of millennial pockets. It’s safe to say that this generation is a game changer in the hospitality industry. Hotels are taking notice, and shifting designs to meet the growing trends for this large market.

What do millennials want out of hotels? They want an experience that is rich and meaningful, one that they can immediately share on their social media channels. This has led to the rise of boutique and lifestyle hotels, such as Cambria Hotel & Suites, Tru by Hilton, Home2 Suites, AC Hotels by Marriott, and Moxy by Marriott. Another important trend is being able to experience the local culture of the city. Downtown hotels, such as the BR&P designed Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Louisville and the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center in Evansville, do just that, with tons of restaurants and entertainment options within walking distance.

One of the biggest changes in hospitality design is a shift to an open, social lobby area. Millennials don’t want to sit at their desk, working alone in their rooms, instead opting for a more connected environment.  Another change is upscale bathrooms. Millennials tend to be unconcerned with traditional rooms, preferring smaller bedrooms with larger spa-like bathrooms that include amenities such as waterfall showers and his and hers sinks.

Cambria targets millennials through technology integration, flexibility with 24 hour food and gym access, and providing local craft beer and specialties at the hotel bar and bistro.
